These notes provide basic instructions on using the Smartline Maps searches. However users should note that these maps require some familiarity with the Smartline map classification in order to be used most effectively. More information which can assist in using and understanding these maps can be found in Introduction, and in the reports available for download from the Reports and Data.
Use the drop-down list to select one of three alternative ways to search and view the Smartline maps. The alternatives are (see the Introduction for full explanation):
Redraw time for Smartline maps can be slow. Therefore it is advisable that you constrain your search to a specific region of interest, by zooming in before selecting your map display (search) options.
Depending on the settings on your computer, the selection/output panel sometimes appears below the map and sometime beside it. If you want to have the selection/output panel beside the map please use the following resolution settings for your PC screen display: 1280 X 1024 pixels.
This window allows the user to set-up the desired map display using the search criteria available in each of the three tabs. The Summary tab changes depending on the Search option selected (see above).
Coastal Landform Stability Class Search SummaryDisplays coastal landform stability classes and pie-chart indicating proportion of displayed coast occupied by each theme class. Many users will find this the most useful map display, even where coastal stability is not their primary interest, since the stability classification refers to easily recognisable coastal landform assemblaghes and types. Use the 'Stability Themes' drop-down list to select a stability theme for display . If "All Themes" is selected, only the broad stability classes are displayed, however if an individual theme is selected then the sub-classes of that theme are displayed. Because stability themes may overlap, stability themes % on the pie chart may exceed 100% Also for this reason, where overlap occurs the full extent of each stability theme may not be visible on the map when 'All Themes' are displayed; Each theme should be displayed separately to obtain a map of the full extent of each class within each theme
Smartline Geomorphic Search (Simple) SummaryDisplays a single selected attribute theme (e.g., Intertidal landforms, Backshore profile, Geology, etc) and summary coastal lengths. Users should note that the displayed themes are shown at their broadest level of classification only.
Smartline Geomorphic Search (Advanced) SummaryThis search provides a powerful means of displaying particular user-selected landform types or attribute combinations, however users need to be familiar with the Smartline classification in order to use this search effectively. Further information and sample advanced search exercises are available in the Introduction.
This window displays the search criteria being used in the Smartline Map Display, and allows selection of background map layers and pre-defined zoom areas Query Criteria tab Displays Search Criteria (theme classes) selected in the Search Criteria Selection Window that are being used to construct the map display
Search Criteria Selection Window (lower left hand side of window)
This window allows the selection of specific Smartline Attribute (theme) classes to construct a highly specific map display.
The theme classes chosen here are listed in the Map Display criteria Window.
Effective use of these Search criteria Selection tools requires that the user to be familiar with the structure of the Smartline classification.
All of the various criteria in the Query window are ORed or unioned. Meaning that the lines displayed will satisfy at least one of the selected criteria. Thus if we selected Backshore Profile - Plains and Backshore Proximal - Low Cliffs, the lines displayed on the map will either have a backshore profile of plains or backshore proximal of low cliffs, or both.
Four tabs are found in this window:
Layers tab: This tab allows users to select addition map layers as background to the Smartline map. Use the tick-boxes to select desired background layer, then click the 'Update Map' button to display the selected layers in the map window
GoTo tab: This tab allows the user to zoom the map to a selected area by selecting the desired area from pull-down lists. Areas that can be zoomed to include States, NRM regions, Local Government Areas, IMCRA regions or Marine regions. The map will update to show only the region that was selected. The summary tab will also update to reflect information about the region selected.
Left hand side of the window where the Smartline map is displayed. Map tools available (left to right across the top of the map window) are:
The globe tool displays the outline of the full country - no Smartlines are shown at this level
Back to previous map button - returns map display to previous extent
The zoom in tool allows users to zoom in to a specific part of the map. The information on the right hand side of the window is updated to show details about the area displayed on the map.
Zoom out tool allows users to double the area shown centered around the point clicked
Pan tool centres the map around the clicked point
Information tool can be used to examine all the attributes of any segment
of the Smartline in any search window. If the segment is a beach in the ABSAMP Beaches database, the relevant ABSAMP data records for that beach are also returned (see Beach glossary and help for explanations of the ABSAMP data fields).
By selecting this tool and clicking on the Smartline, it will return the attributes of all Smartline data fields for that segment of the coast in a pop-up window.
Note that the attributes returned include not only simple verbal attributes describing the coast, but also numerical codes and other attributes
which will appear mysterious unless users consult the Smartline Data Model in the PDF document 'Smartline Manual & Data Dictionary'
which can be downloaded under the 'Reports and Data' link on the sidebar. Included in the attributes that can be read with this tool
are the sources of the data in each attribute field ('ref' or reference ID fields) and the scale of those data sources as a measure of their likely accuracy
('scale' fields). The REFERENCE_ID numbers provided by the 'ref' fields can be used to obtain the metadata and bibliographic details of each data source
from the 'Smartline Data Sources List' which can be downloaded under the Reports and Data link on the sidebar, and is also provided as an Appendix in the Manual & Data Dictionary report (downloadable from Reports and Data).
Scale bar shows the current scale of the map.
